Dr. E.E. Maitland

Dr. Elmer Maitland arrived in Spartansburg in 1903, having purchased the practice of Dr. P Fisher who had served the community since before 1895. Dr. Maitland and his wife Allie and daughter Leota lived on Mechanic Street. The house has since been demolished and is part of the property now housing Spartansburg Regional Health Center.
Dr. Maitland’s practice continued until 1927. During this time, he was an active participant in the community as well as a respected physician. He handled vaccinations for several area schools and was called upon in 1916 to determine the sanity of a man found wandering a rural area near Centerville. The man was from Pittsburgh, and had been wandering aimlessly for a few days. He was unable to share names of relatives or an address. Following conversations, Dr. Maitland and another physician determined that he should be sent to the Warren State Hospital for the Insane.
As a community member, Maitland served a 2-year term as Councilman, receiving winning votes on the Republican, Democrat, and Prohibition ballots. He was the chair of the Sidewalk Committee. In 1925, as Registrar of Vital Statistics, he noted that there were 24 births and 16 deaths in the area, which was seen as good news for the future. Also in 1925, Dr. Maitland helped out garage owner, Mr. Ruggles, by traveling with him to Cleveland and driving back a new car to be sold at his business.
Maitland’s wife, Allie, was involved with several women’s clubs and was a member of the WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union). They were both actively involved with the Methodist Church.
Closing his practice in Spartansburg in 1927, the Maitlands spent the spring and summer with their daughter Leota and her family in Pittsburgh. While there, Dr. Maitland was employed as a Medical Examiner for the school district, covering 60 classrooms. They returned to Spartansburg in the fall. Dr. Maitland became ill in November and was hospitalized. Following an operation, he suffered a stroke from which he could not recover. He passed away on December 13, 1927.
